Of Superhuman Bondage: Superman Co-Creator’s Racy Secret Identity

The Man of Steel meets S&M when comics archivist Craig Yoe hits Hollyweird on Wednesday with several Suicide Girls in tow. The gutter-glam models will act out racy scenes from Yoe’s new book, Secret Identity: The Fetish Art of Superman’s Co-Creator Joe Shuster.



The recently released compilation sheds light on Nights of Horror, a ’50s crime-fiction mag filled with Shuster’s drawings of scantily clad women with whips and plenty of attitude getting kinky with men who looked suspiciously like Clark Kent, Lex Luthor and Jimmy Olsen. The book was optioned earlier this summer for a movie treatment by the Gotham Group.

The film will examine the period in which Shuster, who died in 1992, “wrote the underground Nights of Horror books for the mob,” Yoe told Wired.com, focusing on the Brooklyn Thrill Killers, a group of teenage Jewish neo-Nazis allegedly inspired by Shuster’s bondage porn.

For a sense of what attendees are in for during Yoe’s Wednesday appearance at Los Angeles comic book store Meltdown, watch the hilarious video promo below, which is aptly partnered with Devo’s “Whip It.” But beware: There is no stop or pause button on the embedded player. Yoe’s visit will shine light on the surreal life of Shuster, who infamously sought out comics’ controversial underground after warring alongside Superman scribe Jerry Siegel with DC Comics over copyrights and other things that keep lawyers and estate managers busy.

“My book throws out the popular conception of Joe,” Yoe said. “The fact is, Superman made him a superwealthy man, but it was a rags-to-riches-to-rags story. His court battle to get a firm piece of the pie was lost and the co-creator of one of the most recognizable icons in the world found himself on the skids, banned by the comic book industry that he started.”

In the end, the Supreme Court had to get involved to keep the so-called comic obscenities of Shuster and other alternative artists in line. Secret Identity recounts how underground comics exposed dark corners of postwar pop culture, from sleazy, mob-bankrolled comics to sadomasochistic pornography. Talk about your killer scripts!

“It reads like a movie!” Yoe laughed. “It’s got a big-time superhero, a starving artist, showgirls, Hitler, murderous juvenile delinquents, public-park flogging of girls, good and bad cops, pious do-gooders, a singing defense attorney, a Supreme Court obscenity trial and book burnings, all set in the ’50s. Line up!”

Yoe revels in the hidden histories of comics, and not just because they’re money at the movies. In Boody: The Bizarre Comics of Boody Rogers, published by Fantagraphics earlier this year, the historian has helped uncover one of comics’ left-field treasures.

“Boody’s comics could survive a nuclear holocaust,” Yoe wisecracked. “Silliness, sex and surrealism. Why can’t all so-called comic books be like this?”
